One of the highest-paid entry tracks in India. Here's the exact tool progression that gets callbacks.

DevOps career guide — how to break into it in 2026

DevOps has become one of the highest-paid entry-level tech tracks in India. Here's the honest guide.

What DevOps actually is

DevOps is the practice of automating everything between "code written" and "code in production". It combines development, operations, and security into one loop.

The core toolkit in 2026

  • →Version control: Git + GitHub / GitLab
  • →CI / CD: GitHub Actions or GitLab CI (both dominant now)
  • →Containers: Docker + Kubernetes basics
  • →Infrastructure as Code: Terraform (dominant), Ansible
  • →Monitoring: Prometheus + Grafana
  • →Cloud: at least one of AWS/GCP/Azure

You don't need all six on day one. Learn Git → Docker → GitHub Actions → Terraform in that order.

The projects that get callbacks

  • →A GitHub repo with a full CI/CD pipeline that builds, tests, and deploys a small app
  • →A Terraform module that provisions a small AWS infrastructure (VPC, EC2, RDS)
  • →A Kubernetes manifest that deploys a two-service app locally with Minikube

Publish each with a README. Recruiters actually read them.

Salary reality

Fresher DevOps engineers in Bengaluru: ₹5–9 LPA at startups. 2–3 years: ₹12–20 LPA. Senior SRE: ₹25–45 LPA. The salary curve is steep because supply is limited.

The interview format

  • →Live troubleshooting (they'll break something, you fix it)
  • →YAML and Bash fluency
  • →One system design question
  • →One "why did that outage happen?" post-mortem discussion
