Resume Tips for Freshers That Actually Work

The 7-second test, the one-page rule, and the exact structure recruiters shortlist in 2026.

Resume tips for freshers that actually work in 2026

Recruiters spend an average of 7.4 seconds on a fresher resume before deciding to read further or skip. Here's how to survive the 7-second test.

The one-page rule

Fresher resumes must be one page. Two pages signal padding. If you have less than three years of experience, cut it to one page.

The order that works

  • →Header — name, phone, email, GitHub, LinkedIn
  • →Skills — six lines maximum, comma-separated
  • →Projects — three max, each with impact + tech + link
  • →Experience — internships, freelance, part-time
  • →Education — bottom, one line each

Projects trump education

Every recruiter we surveyed said this: for freshers, a well-explained project beats a marquee college. Structure each project as:

  • →What it does — one line
  • →How you built it — one line, listing tech
  • →Impact — one metric (users, response time, accuracy)
  • →Link — GitHub + live demo

Words to remove

  • →"Passionate" — everyone claims to be.
  • →"Team player" — the interview will tell.
  • →"Hard-working" — table stakes.
  • →Buzzwords without context — "synergy", "leverage", "utilize".

Words to add

  • →Verbs — built, shipped, deployed, reduced, automated.
  • →Numbers — "reduced response time by 40%", "onboarded 200 users", "handled 10k daily requests".

Formatting

  • →ATS-friendly (no fancy templates that break on parsing)
  • →10–11 point font
  • →Sans-serif — Inter, Helvetica, or Arial
  • →Clean margins
  • →PDF export only

The one file you should never send

Never send a Word document. PDF only. Word file changes formatting across machines and screams "amateur".
